Ways to Shop & Support

Bookmark.png

Our store is in a charming old Victorian building with high ceilings, hardwood floors, lots of comfortable chairs, books displayed on tables, and bookshelves filled with an eclectic collection of books.

Generally, our prices are 50%-60% below those of other quality used bookstores. And we accept cash, checks, and credit/debit cards.

The Bookmark is open for in-store shopping by reservation or shop our Virtual Bookstore!

Some of our donations include unique or collectible books that may bring in a higher price for the store by placing them for sale online. For these books, we have partnered with Amazon and eBay.

Each book (or item) is carefully researched to determine their value and appropriateness for sale online. We currently have over 2,000 titles listed on Amazon and 200 items (books and ephemera) on eBay. Shop our online stores today!

Phyllis is a Massachusetts native who moved to California in 1991. She began volunteering at The Bookmark in 2009. As a volunteer, she worked closely with the Bookstore managers and developed expertise in process management and merchandising, customer service, store operations, and volunteer staff management.

Phyllis' care for the store, customers, and volunteer staff ensures that the store hums along efficiently and happily.

Our Volunteers

In 1995, The Bookmark Bookstore opened in its current location in Old Oakland at 721 Washington St. Friends of the Oakland Public Library board members teamed up with a handful of store volunteers to move hundreds of books down the street to the new location. Today we have...

66 volunteers keep the store open 7 days a week (before Covid-19!).
