Mini-Grant Spotlight: 81st Avenue (Virtual) Children’s Book Club

Updated: May 29, 2020

Can a children’s book club go virtual? Librarian Sally Engelfried says yes!

Funded by a Friends of the Oakland Public Library mini-grant, Sally decided to take her book club for 4th and 5th graders online to adapt while we stay at home due to COVID-19.

A fun moment in my week when I got to engage with the 81st Ave. Book Worms through Zoom. Our book club was just getting off the ground when we got the order to shelter in place, so I was really glad we managed to meet and discuss 'Charlie Hernandez and the League of Shadows' by Ryan Calejo. It was so nice to see and talk to our patrons again!

The Book Worms continued meeting on Zoom until the end of the school year, discussing three more books. They finished the program with an unforgettable author visit by Newbery Award-winner Jerry Craft!

Oakland Public Library staff at all locations have the chance to apply for $1,500-2,000 in mini-grant funds (totaling $20,000) to implement or improve library programs or services.
