At the
July 10, 2006 meeting, the FOPL board of directors approved
$54,500 of grants to
the Oakland Public Library for Fiscal Year 2006-2007.
Here is a brief look at the activities we will support
this year:
 |
Constituent Polling in
support of the Library Master Plan --
$25,000 – As you’ve
been reading in this newsletter and the local papers, the Oakland Public
Library has prepared a Master Plan to include facility improvements throughout
the system. As part of the process, community meetings were held at each
branch, and FOPL funded a professional poll to determine the level of public
support for the financing of the Plan.
|
 |
Main Library programs
-- $5,000 -- This
year the Main Library staff hosted several very successful programs, including
a three-part series
presented by Lonely Planet
travel book publishers. They would like the resources to have more -- the
grant covers the annual Native American, Poetry, and LGBT programs, and will
allow staff to host an additional eleven programs.
|
 |
National Library Week
programs -- $4,000
– Includes author event and public awareness campaign.
|
 |
Branch Library programs
-- $7,000 -- This
grant will enable the branches to sponsor 23 programs for adults throughout
the year at a cost of $300
per program.
|
 |
One City, One Book
campaign – $5,000
– Last year's “One City, One Book” campaign was enormously successful.
Proceeds benefited the Library's Program and Building Funds. The Library
would like to make it an annual event to bring the community together in
reading once a year.
|
 |
Volunteer Recognition
-- $2,000 --
Supports incentives for all volunteers system wide.
|
 |
Youth Library Card
Replacement Scholarships --
$2,000 -- This is a
pilot project to encourage young people to return to the library by covering
the cost for the first 2000 youth who need to replace their library cards.
|
 |
Library School
Scholarships for Oakland Public Library staff --
$2,500
|
 |
Library Director’s
Discretionary Fund --
